The time changed this weekend, which brings thoughts of spring and summer. If you are like many people, thoughts of warmer weather can also lead you to think of “getting in shape.” Some people will lace up their running shoes and go for their first run of the year. Others will hit the weight room. Still others will start counting calories. Many people will do all three and then feel overwhelmed or, worse, get injured. I want to help you avoid that. My 20+ years of experience in the health and fitness world have shown me that people who take small, manageable steps do better over the long run.

You probably remember from school that the body likes to stay in homeostasis and avoid significant changes. Overhauling your lifestyle in one colossal swoop is a giant change, which is why it is so difficult.

“How do I ease in?” you might be thinking. Exercise scientists often cite the 10% rule. This rule is a good way to give you an idea of how to stay in homeostasis. Increasing exercise time by 10% per week is generally considered safe. So, I challenge you to pick one area and ease into it.
